Tribe

2025

What constitutes the identity of a people? What makes us distinctive throughout history? Each community has a unique identity that, when intertwined with diverse skills and roles, creates a cohesive and functional nation.

The tribe represents the transformative power of social and economic connection, as well as its cultural legacy that, in modernity, influences future governance and the construction of a solid identity.

In this series of 12 works, Ana Liz Cordero highlights that the unity and shared values of tribes are fundamental to facing adversity and building collaborative systems, especially in times of conflict. By remembering her roots, the artist focuses her message on the rich diversity of Latin American indigenous cultures, whose traditions and knowledge, transmitted orally over generations, are reflected in her works.

The symbolism of the series is inspired by the patterns painted with Wituk on the faces of the indigenous women of Sarayacu, Ecuador, who are the guardians of ancestral wisdom, as well as of the flora and fauna of their territory, and who represent the courage and struggle to preserve the Amazon in the face of the exploitation of their lands. The artist uses the color black to represent the resistance and resilience of these women on a white background, which symbolizes the triumph of peace, while the seeds represent the fruit of our land, which we are all called to care for and preserve in unity, as the great tribe that we are.
